Clans Collection

Hello! Tigibh a-steach!  Welcome to the Clan Collection which is housed within the Charles S. Low Memorial Library. There are three bookcases dedicated to the Clans.

There are almost two shelves of books which contain information on the Clans. These books speak of the clans, their tartans, their chiefs, the area they were from, or their castles, etc.. You can even learn about the clan system itself or about Scottish families.
Also housed on the shelves are leather binders and literature holders which each contain information on one specific clan.  There are approximately forty highlighted Clans in our collection. If your Clan is not represented, let us work together and put another binder onto the shelves! Start the process by sending an email request to the Low Library at Library@detroitscots.com.
On a rotating basis we also showcase our artifacts. You may find commemorative items, small historical dioramas, figurines and even photographs.

Please, come and visit with the Clans during our regular library hours.  You never know what interesting story, piece of information or artifact you might discover.

Thig a choimhead oirnn!

Welcome

Welcome to the Charles Low Memorial Library, home to a rich collection of Scottish history books and genealogy resources. Thanks for stopping by.  When we look into our past, we find more than names and dates. We find the people who helped shape who we are today.

Whether you’re starting your family history search or building on years of research, our volunteers are happy to help you dive in, ask questions, and uncover new connections to your Scottish heritage.

We look forward to being part of your journey.

Our Library’s Lists & Forms:

St. Andrew’s Society Archives

The Society Archives are currently in 2 large cabinets in a room adjacent to the Library. They contain boxes of documents that the Library has received and acquired over the last 7 years. Putting together an archive is a monumental task that will never be completed and will take a considerable amount of time organizing and documenting every piece of paper. The Library team has begun this process with sorting these documents into the following initial categories, more will be added as needed:

      • Genealogy
      • Highland Games
      • Maps
      • Programs
      • St. Andrew’s Society

The Library team will begin looking at each document, identify the content, enter the information into an index and place into archive quality folders with an identification number and placed into the Archive Cabinets. Throughout this process the Library Team will digitize each document and make them available on the Society’s Web Page.
The Library staff has already assisted members and the community with searching the Society’s Archives for information.
Please let us know if there is something that you are looking for that we may be able to assist you in your research.

Thank you
The Library Staff

What to Donate?

The Library is always looking for donation of books, magazines, documents any material that is Scottish, Irish or English in subject matter. We are also looking for Scottish artifacts to display within the Library and to be included in our archives.

The Library accepts items that are “garage sale” quality, again with the Scottish, Irish and English subject matter, that can be sold to raise funds to support the Library.

Funds of any amount are greatly accepted and are used for both the on-going support and growth of the Library. Checks are made out to St. Andrew’s Society of Detroit a 501(c) (3) nonprofit charity designated for the Library Fund.
